Love these! Any chance of a walkthrough/making of? At a guess I'd say you laid down the flats, darker areas then let that dry before painting the details? Did you use anything to protect the white or just paint really carefully?
Pretty much, yes, I start with the dark, ink heavy zones and wash the ink toward the lighter zones. once the base is dry, I add some scales here and there.
I have a rough drawing underneath and try to stick to it while painting. I'm not always sure where the white parts are going to be, it's really while painting that it gets decided. It depends a lot on wether or not a mess up aha.
I'm glad you like them
Honestly though, the ink does a lot of the job. Depending on the ratio ink/water the color changes from a yellow, almost gold color to a rich blue. As it dries the colors tend to fade a little but you can bring them back in with some photoshop tweaking. The originals end up less saturated though.
These dragons are super intriguing. I enjoy that they aren't all the same and you created different breeds of dragons and didn't just do the same dragon over and over again. Your style is beautiful, the lights and darks flowing together perfectly. Do you mind if I ask what kind of brush you used? I have never learned to inkwash but it has always peaked my interest and I want to learn how.
My favorite dragon is the one on the top right, it's adorable and perfectly models my idea of a dragon. Very nice work!
