Neko no kotoba by Rhynn Neko no kotoba by Rhynn
:iconflohock: and I recently contributed to a french-japanese vocabulary textbook, by my former teacher Frédéric Barazer. It was published last month by Ellipses Editions. We did two covers and about 20 black and white illustrations.

This is the first cover proposition made according to the author's description, sadly it was rejected because the attitude of the cat (lazily sitting with food) didn't send the right message according to the commercials.

I posted this one because, well, it is quite cute and I actually prefer it to the second cover (validated) and prefer it a lot to the final printed version. Which....Went through the hands of a graphist particularly obsessed with the ctrl, c and v keys.

That said, you can order the book from amazon through this link : [link]

And also see more images from the book on my blog here : [link]

A french-japanese vocabulary book? Actually that sounds like it was fun/

The book itself is great. It has a lot of information, is easy to use and has a nice presentation. Working on it wasn't that fun. Also partially because at the same time flo and I were working full time at Ubisoft india and it didn't leave us with much free time. It's also true neither of us are big fans of black and white work.

It was really a great experience at many levels. I wish they'd hire juniors so I could have stayed :)

Yeah. If you put aside the fact my plane landed in a meadow, that I spent one night puking guts&blood and got bad allergies because of the pollution. Well, that and no rain for 9 months.. Otherwise it was awesome.

Also, I agree with the previous commenters that this cover is a lot more fun and unique, the validated one looks very typical with nothing very special about it.

Yeah. Fat kitty was fun. I liked the little guy. And I don't often like things I do.

I have a very hard time being satisfied by anything I do and I tend to have very poor appreciation for my work. Doesn't prevent me from drawing anyway and trying to improve as much as I can. But it's often very depressing :/

I see. =\ Perfectionist or do you have a bit of low self esteem as far as your art skills go?

Unfortunately,"a bit" would be a major understatement. And it doesn't apply just to art skills.

I see. =\ I have low self esteem too, so I know where you're coming from. It's hard, it just never feels like you're good enough, and on the occasion when you actually feel good, just the tiniest little thing that goes wrong is enough to ruin it again.

Yup, that's exactly it. And no matter what you achieve, you end up finding justifications for it. "oh no, but you see that's because they were mistaken about me", "oh no but people helped me so it's their fault I succeeded", "Ah but if you compare me with the shitload of people who do much better than me it's meaningless" etc etc.

What bothers me most with this is that it gets in the way of progress. Motivated, positive people learn faster, work better and are more efficient.

They sometime also have a tendency to blame you for being a depressed asshole on purpose.

What the... fuck have been going on in the person's mind who editet the final cover. That's simply ridiculously retarded. If you want to be lazy, at least try to cover it up by rotating or changing the sizes or...

I understand this kitty here might look a bit lazy, but yeah. I still also prefer this one. This first version has a little more personality and it's cute c:
(Although the second version's cat reminds me a bit of Maru, which is adorable too)

Yeah, Maru definitely was the inspiration behind the second one. But I Really don't understand how any real graphic designer/ graphist would do something like that. Even the worst 13 year old lens flare addict out there on DA would have more sense. And the author doesn't seem to find a problem with it at all and doesn't understand that this might be giving me a lot of very bad publicity.

I don't understand that either, that shouldn't be something a real graphic designer should be doing. Beside that it's irresponsible to edit someone else's picture like that... it really can give you bad publicity when your illustration is presented like that.

Yes, precisely. And besides, I had told them specifically that we didn't want them to edit it and that we'd do necessary modifications if requested. But apparently the illustrators don't have a say about their own work.

Well now. That's even worse D: If you have offered to do modifications, why not let you do them... unless they thought it's "easier and faster" to edit it by themselves... and less hastle since the artist can't refuse or do something that didn't go along their vision.

Yes, that's probably what happened. It's really unfortunate because the book itself is actually very good.
