This is pretty much a test to see how DA deals with flash files. It's part of my diploma project, The House, which I am working on like crazy lately. Hence the lack of updates.

This is one of the main characters. There are many things wrong with the animation, and especially with the skinning. But I don't really have time to investigate it in detail.
Beside you all know I hate animation xp

anyway! enjoy!

[edit] it is actually not working....I'm trying to find an alternative.
[edit2] It does work. It's not looping tremendously well but it works :)

[edit 3] I corrected some bad problems in the leg's skinning and adjusted the paw movement.

I don't do much animation anymore, but I might post the other creature's walk cycles if people are curious :)
Thank you for the comment.

I modelled it and used basic quadrupedal CAT bones and added a few more for the wings. I then used one of the preexisting CAT animations and heavily tweaked it to get that result.

I don't know why I didn't find it at first glance. It's quite a cute one :) I like the design. It's too bad that there is the big DA watermark on the images though. Can't really fully appreciate it.

Yes, it is...This would have needed a lot of work but I really didn't have time. Maybe I will try to work a little more on the sphinx after the diploma. Right now I'm just trying to produce as quickly as possible.

Looking forward to see your next submissions, and good luck with your project!

Well, skinning itself isn't very hard. It's more of a long boring task rather than a difficult one. The problem here is that the sphinx cat was one of my first 3D character modelling and I hadn't done any 3D rigging or animation at that time not really studied modelling at all.

So the model's topology isn't very good and it's not very easely skinnable/animable. (It's still entirely my fault) But if you work with a model that is well thought and already rigged, it's really not a difficult thing.
You may enjoy it!

:wow: This is such an excellent work, the light effects are awesome, makes it look a bit scary but I would not say it looks really malevolent. It reminds me just a bit of the sphinxes from the Mirrormask movie, but these guys were much creepier.. Are you going to add textures too?

:iconrhynn:
Rhynn Featured By Owner May 22, 2011  Student Digital Artist
Yes, mirrormask was a big inspiration for some parts of the project. :)
As far as textures go, I've exported some normals and a diffuse with some colours but I don't know if I will have time to do nice renders with them as 3DSmax has a hard time interpreting normals correctly with mental ray and I can't really spend to much time learning how to bake all that.

It was done in 3DSmax, using CAT and adjustment layers. Rendered with mental ray.

Really nice work what modeling software are you using Rhynn?

Also have you seen sculptris? [link]

With your sculpting ability it might be something you'd have fun with.

I'm using 3DSmax though for the project I also use Mudbox and a bit of Zbrush and I plan on getting to know Xnormals too.

Yes I know sculptris, the so called free-Zbrush. Since it doesn't require installation I usually have it on my hard drive and try it around during breaks. But I haven't had the occasion to really spend a lot of time on it.

There are several demo videos the creator made that really show off the simplicity of the interface but it's power as well. By no means would I say sculptris is better than zbrush (who now owns Sculptris) but for minimalistic screen clutter I think its' pretty slick.

I use blender quite a bit. It's amazing how far they've come.

best wishes to you my friend.

Yes, though I updated another slightly improved version, it could be better but I don't really have the time. The main problem is that the sphinx was one of my first 3D characters and I didn't know much how to model (hence the messed topology),let alone modelling for animation purposes.
But that's how you learn I guess.

Wow... The effort in that is stupendous! Call me easily impressed, but I love the fluidity and the way you've captured the muscles rippling and the fantasy anatomy. I find it hard enough in still images, let alone 3D animation! Beautiful design too. Good luck with the rest of the project!

I don't really like babies either, which is probably why he has this childlike appearance. It's supposed to make you feel ill at ease, especially since he has a deep male voice.

Because it wasn't entirely consistent with the scenario and because the teachers and classmates agree the current version was better.

And I love sphynx cats too :> They're smooth, warm and pretty. They need more love.

It's 3DSmax, I know a lot of people prefer MAYA but we don't have it at school and I haven't had the occasion to test it.

If you want my opinion.. I think I prefer to unwrap UVs to skinning. Skinning is my personal nightmare.
